i need some examples on the penalties that might be imposed on your business if fail to secure customer information and provide an ergonomically safe computer working environment.

It depends on the information. If it is medical, HIPAA would come into play with some really stiff penalties. If it is just addresses and subjects customers to junk mail, probably nothing worst than lost Goodwill.

Read up on European legislation same as I had to, but is mainly fines.
Well, if you fail to secure customer information, you leave customers open to identity theft, credit card fraud, etc...and if the source of these, is traced back to you, you could be sued in civil/criminal court.
Not providing an ergonomically safe working environment, could cause damage to an employees body, such as carpal tunnel syndrome, improper stress on ones back... These could cost you in workers comp suits.
