Dear Governor ____________,
An execution date of __________ has been set for ___________. ___________ was a juvenile,
under the age of 18 years, at the time of the offense. I urge you to commute his sentence to a
more appropriate punishment for a juvenile offender. In appealing for clemency, I in no way
intend to dismiss the crime or to disregard the anguish and suffering of the victim鈥檚 family and
friends. Please see the Case overview for information about the crime.
As ___________ was an adolescent at the time of his offense, his execution would be contrary to
the criminal justice standards that ____________ insert state and the United States advocate.
Adolescence is a transitional period, a time of considerable change, when emotions, judgment,
impulse control and even the brain itself are still developing. To execute such an individual would
contradict the fundamental principles of American justice, which punishes according to the
degree of culpability.
As a member of the world community, the US acts almost alone when it executes juvenile
offenders. Indeed, in 2002, the US was the only nation to execute juvenile offenders. Since 1990,
only seven countries have reportedly executed juveniles: Iran, Saudi Arabia, Nigeria, the
Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), Yemen, Pakistan and the USA, with that number of
nations dwindling to only four since the year 2000; Iran, the USA, Pakistan, and the DRC. The
US is the only country in the world which regularly executes juvenile offenders at a pace that is
disturbing by international standards. Additionally, within the US only a handful of states permit
the execution of those less than 18 year of age at the time of the crime. Of the 38 states that allow
the death penalty as a punishment only 22 sanction it for the execution of juveniles. Alarmingly
however, only 7 of the 22 states have actually executed juvenile offenders since the reinstatement
of the death penalty.
I appeal to you to abide by the criminal justice principles of the state of _________ and to
exercise the powers vested in your office to commute the sentence of _________ to a more
human punishment.
Yours sincerely,

It could be that he deserves punishment. Maybe he could do community service in some out of the way place like Alaska. Incredible though it seems, there are some people who want to tear up that pristine wilderness just to get oil.
What's the details?
Not sure yet, cant ask for clemency until the end of this august. It will be the end of my 6th year.

You need to pay a lawyer to write it up for you, it will greatly increase your odds of clemency.

Contrary to what the idiots here say, not all "criminals" need to be hauled off to Canada. People screw up at a young age and need a second chance. When I was 20 I thought I could easily out run the cops, but I forgot that the gas light was on lol....ooops....my bad! No need for deportation lol
Depending on the severity of the crime he has been convicted of, it may be best to hire a lawyer to write it. But if you know you need one and want to write it yourself, just make it plain and simple. Don't try to sound like a lawyer, because you will make a fool of yourself. Just write that you are asking the judge (or whoever it is) for clemency because your brother is repentful, sorry, willing to correct his behavior, etc. Give a story or two about good things he has done for society, and emphasize that his behavior has changed. Make it short and sweet. A couple of pages, with a description of his personality and examples of good things he has done, is plenty.
Good luck =)

PS Are you sure a clemency letter is appropriate? Did the judge recommend one? Usually you only write one after conviction and if there is a parole board or other authority that can overrule the sentence. If you're not sure, check with the lawyer or public defender.
that is the beauty of our laws. You can right a letter to the people of the court asking for the judge to offer leniancy. It may help and it may not. Ask yourself though are you helping or hindering your brother? Good Luck and God be with you.
